Making a Trellis for Climbing Roses

My cottage house came with a climbing rose that never grew or bloomed, despite my efforts to nourish it with water and fresh soil.  I researched what was causing this and I learned that climbing roses need to be supported on something, like a fence, trellis, or pergola, to promote growth.

Since my climbing rose was planted near a window and far from a fence, I couldn't use a leaning trellis and I didn't want to build an expensive pergola.  I thought about replanting the rose, but then I saw a great tutorial on how to build an obelisk trellis on The Spruce, and this seemed like the best solution.  I purchased the wood strips, made some minor cuts, assembled the trellis with nails, and painted it with white paint I had from another paint project.

After a few weeks, the climbing rose started growing through the obelisk trellis and finally bloomed many beautiful red roses.
